Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens when you call an emergency locksmith at 2 AM — response times, pricing, and process, answered straight.

Lockout Questions, Answered Fast

I'm locked out right now — how fast can you get here?

Most southeast Houston calls see a technician in 15 to 30 minutes, and our dispatcher tells you the real ETA the moment you call. We route the closest mobile unit to you, not the next name on a list. If we say twenty minutes, we mean twenty minutes.

Do you actually pick up the phone at 3 AM?

A live dispatcher answers every call, every hour, every day of the year — no voicemail, no callback queue. Night crews stay on the road across the Galveston Bay area specifically for after-hours lockouts. Middle-of-the-night emergencies are the core of what we do, not an exception.

How much does a lockout cost?

Our service call runs $45 to $95, a typical house lockout lands between $70 and $140, and a car lockout between $60 and $140. The exact figure depends on your lock type and distance, and you hear the number over the phone before anyone is dispatched. What we quote is what you pay.

Will you have to break my lock to get me in?

Almost never. Our techs open the overwhelming majority of doors with picks, bypass tools, and air wedges that leave your lock and door exactly as they found them. If a rare high-security cylinder forces a destructive opening, you approve it first and we can fit a replacement on the same visit.

My only car key is gone. Can you make one from scratch?

Yes — losing every key is not a dealership-only problem. We generate new keys from the vehicle itself, cutting the blade by code and programming the transponder or fob right at your curb. Most makes and model years are covered, and the whole job usually wraps in under an hour.

What should I tell the dispatcher when I call?

Give us your exact location, whether it's a home, vehicle, or business, and for cars the year, make, and model. Mention anything urgent — a child or pet inside, a running engine, an unsafe spot — so we can prioritize the run. That's it; we handle the rest while the tech is already rolling.

How do you confirm the house or car is actually mine?

Before we open anything, the technician checks ID against the address or the vehicle's registration or insurance card. If those documents are stuck on the other side of the door, no problem — we verify them the moment you're back in. It's a quick step that protects you as the rightful owner.

How do I pay once the job is done?

Cards, cash, Zelle, Apple Pay, and Google Pay all work, settled on the spot when the work is finished. Every customer gets a written receipt showing the price that was quoted up front. Business accounts on recurring work can request net invoicing.

Which parts of Houston do you cover?

Our home turf is southeast Houston and the Galveston Bay corridor — Pasadena, Clear Lake, Webster, League City, Friendswood, Kemah, Baytown, and down to Galveston Island — plus central Houston neighborhoods. Because our vans stage on the southeast side, bay-area response times are among the fastest you'll find. Outside that zone, call anyway and we'll tell you honestly if we can reach you quickly.

Is HTX Key licensed to do locksmith work in Texas?

Yes — HTX Key holds a state license through the Texas DPS Private Security Bureau, and our technicians carry pocket cards you can ask to see on arrival. Insurance and bonding are in place on every job. Never let an unlicensed operator touch your locks, at any hour.

Someone broke in — how soon can you rekey my locks?

Treat this as an emergency and so do we: we can rekey the same day, including nights and weekends, so stolen or compromised keys stop working immediately. The tech resets every affected cylinder to one new key and checks that each door actually latches and throws correctly. Don't wait until morning to lock the intruder out for good.

My key fob stopped working — dead battery or does it need reprogramming?

Nine times out of ten it's just the coin cell, and swapping it takes two minutes for a few dollars. If a fresh battery doesn't wake it up, the fob has likely lost its pairing or failed internally, and we can reprogram or replace it on site. Tell the dispatcher the symptoms and we'll bring the right gear the first time.
